'Market Street' 7 September - 21 September 2024

Welcome to ‘Market Street’, an exhibition of new paintings by Jane Hooper, whose unique style is easily recognisable.

The gallery is open 11am - 3pm on Sunday, 8th September to view this uplifting and fresh exhibition in its entirety. It is definitely worth a visit.

Born in 1968, Jane Hooper is a self-taught artist living in a small village in Buckinghamshire. After more than 25 years of painting it is the genre of still life that has become a real passion. From her studio Jane sets up collections of everyday objects that become  the subject of her work. She works in oils with a tonal palette trying to build shape, colour and importantly texture. Always hoping to make the outcome look spontaneous, confident with a simple naivety.

Keeping her palette simple and tonal allows her to pay special attention to the objects as the main focus and gives continuity. There is real passion and purity to her uncomplicated still life, a technique that she has mastered   over time. She was originally inspired by the work of William Scott. His pared down still life paintings of eggs, pots, pans and other everyday objects motivated her to paint. Other influences have been the kitchen sink painters; John Bratby, Peter Coker, and Jack Smith.

Jane’s still life paintings challenge the way we look at inanimate objects. There is never a straight line or a true curve, instead we see a line that seems unsteady and diverts from the norm. She looks at an ordinary object and creates a painting that through her own interpretation makes it recognisable as her own.

This exhibition ‘Market Street’ has been inspired by a move to a new home with access to a local farmer’s market at the end of her street which she visits often.

This will be Jane’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

Painting illustrated: Two Red Geranium, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 cm
