Inverness-born Iain Holman worked in the advertising and design industry as a graphic designer before changing career to work as an artist. In 2016, Iain graduated with a Master’s Degree in Fine Art from the Open College of the Arts and now exhibits in galleries throughout the UK. Iain’s work has also been on show in the Mall Galleries in London and in 2020 he won the Visual Art Open Award with his painting Indignant II.
Iain’s work is shaped by the enduring fascination with both figurative and animal form, often portraying his subjects as lone figures. From his initial candid observations, he expands upon their pose and physicality in the studio, typically using his subjects to recreate a narrative. Blending realism with abstraction, he works with oils on canvas to create multilayered surface colours that are both structured and immediate.
He currently lives and works from his home studio in Quothquan, south Lanarkshire.
